Synopsis
Protecting What’s Mine is a romance between two people who aren’t looking for love. You know how that goes. Mack is looking for the quiet life and hopes to settle back as a civilian after a deployment that shook her to the core. Performing open heart surgery on the side of the road is nothing compared to the things she’s done to save a life. Linc wanted the family life, but knew when he pursued the chief position he’d have to make sacrifices. So instead, he flirts his way across town and dedicates his time to the only lady in his life; Sunshine, his dog. The pair cross paths a few times, as expected in their line of duty, and before they know it they begin spending time together off the accident scenes.
But as Linc slowly ships away at the walls Mack’s built in her life and around her heart, secrets from her past come back to haunt her. A broken heart isn’t the only thing this couple is risking. When the past comes out, Chief Sexypants isn’t going to sit back and watch his relationship with Dr. Dreamy go down in flames.
Reader Thoughts
This book is on fire. I loved every single page, and couldn’t wait to get to the end. The character’s are complex and developed, and really explored their pasts that shaped them into the person each became. Their relationship felt strong, despite the setback. The small town dynamic had me laughing.
The romance between the pair advanced very quickly, especially since Mack was initially so reserved. The intense flirting between Linc and Mack went from spark to sex jokes instantly, which made it difficult for me to understand that an authentic romance was budding underneath. Initially I took their spicy conversations as casual hookup material, but later realized they were developing feelings. I struggled with that, but perhaps it’s based my perception of a romance budding.
The writing style is very detailed, per setting and scene descriptions. Whenever Linc is on call at a fire, the author describes every detail. Whenever Mack is on a scene, the author describes every detail. Although, within reason, this helps to build an accurate picture, it also distracted me somewhat from the bigger plot of the moment. There was also a lot of information given about side characters, that felt unnecessary at the time. I realized after the fact that it is followup info from the previous book, but it felt cluttered without reading the other beforehand.
