Goodbye, 2016. Hello, year of self care and empowerment.
Well, my first year as a mother is officially over. I no longer have a little Squish I can carry around the house, but a toddler that tests my patience and muscles. I successfully lost all the baby weight and dedicated the year to living an active lifestyle. I want to inspire my daughter to live a happy, healthy lifestyle so that she doesn’t associate fitness with hating her body. I set goals, and I was determined to hit them. So much that J bought me a #GoalDigger shirt for Hanukkah!
So how did I do?
Run/Walk 250 miles
If planned efficiently, this will be approximately 3 miles 2x each week. In theory, it shouldn’t be difficult between GTS runs, WMC walks, HIB, and races. But life happens, and I’m sure I’ll be playing catch-up next December.
Run 16 chipped races
In 2014 I ran the Boilermaker. In 2015 I was pregnant for 9/12 months, but still ran the Turkey Trot. Sub-Goal is to run a 5k under 25 minutes.
Lead 46 Hike it Baby Hikes
Since leaving the Empire State, where mountains are abundant, my aspiration to be an Adirondack 46er has been put on hold. But in homage of that, I want to plan and execute 46 HiB hikes. That’s 3-4 each month, which is perfectly plausible.
Attend as many WMC Walks and Mommy & Me Classes as possible
No excuses. There is a walk every Monday, and yoga class every Tuesday. They’re free. They’re social. And they’re fun. I will attend at least 6 events each month.
- According to my Garmin Connect, I walked/ran 271.43 miles this year. Midway through the year I had actually adjusted my goal to Run 365 miles, but that fell short the last 2 months. I reached my first goal, and exceeded it.
- Technically, I ran 14 races this year. Plus 8-9 of the Sea Rim Striders Summer Series events. But, 3/5 of the Run Houston races were submit virtually (so were not chipped), nor were the Castaway Cay 5k or Stand with the Band 5k. So although I didn’t run 16 chipped races, I ran 14 races. As for the sub goal… not so close. My 5k PR is 29:09.
- My Hike it Baby goal was really good for a while. I jumped right on board leading hikes, recruited members, facilitated other leaders, and attended hikes in Houston and Galveston. I was so involved that I was recommended as a Branch Lead! Unfortunately, going into 2017, the Organization announced they would begin charging for membership. I do not agree with this based on my understanding of the mission statement, and have removed myself from this group. But good news– the other (former) Branch Lead and myself have formed a local program very similar to HIB that achieves the same mission, but with out guidelines. I am so excited to see how ready SET go grows throughout the area.
- And then I crushed this goal. Not only did I begin attending every, single, WMC event (walks, yoga, and playdates), but I also began attending No Excuse Mom workout class after yoga each Tuesday as well. The WMC community saw me so often, and I had my face at so many events, that I was invited to join their peer support network as a “Trusted Community Member”. This goal started as something personal, but it grew into something so much more.
Overall I would say the year was a success! 2017, I’m ready for you. Goals to be determined.
