Sometimes the act of making coffee is too much before you’ve had coffee. Today was one of those days. So instead of microwaving scrambled eggs in a coffee mug, Gingiecakes and I had our second coffee date this week.
There’s nothing more important than the bond between a little girl and her mom. Arguably, the bond with her dad is just as important, but that’s a separate blog post. As a stay-at-home-mama, I am extremely blessed to be able to play a hands on roll in her life. Every “first”, I was there holding her hand or snapping a photo. I’m so thankful I do not miss a thing, and we are able to make memories all day, every single day.
She discovered donuts at church. Who knew such a tiny child could have such a large obsession with a sweet treat? Her love of cupcakes, cookies, and cake is nothing compared to her love of donuts. Perhaps she is a true Texas afterall.
The local donut shop felt like the natural choice for our coffee date this week. I could enjoy my steaming cup of caffeinated bean juice, and she could enjoy a healthy blueberry donut. It is fruit afterall.
Plot Twist: The awkward moment when the two year old orders her own donut, and asks for pink sprinkles. Embrace the adventure!

“Mommy Coffee, hot!” She tells me, before blowing into the cup. Thankfully, the lid had already been off and it began to cool, because she then stuck her finger in the cup.
“No! Mommy’s Coffee!” I tell her quickly, plucking her hand from the rim, and capturing the sweet goodness from her possession.
Si, Si! Gracias
Living on the Mexican border, we are exposed to many Spanish speaking individuals, and call many of them our playdate pals. Although we do not speak Spanish in our home, I encourage her to respond with the basics, and she has picked up some rather quickly.
At one point while devouring her donut, a sprinkle fell onto the seat. I swept it onto the floor, quickly, before she had the chance to reach down and eat it. This angered her, because she clearly wanted to eat it. Yelling at me in gibberish, I tried not to laugh. An employee who had happened to walk by at that moment saw her and laughed.
“Hello,” Gingie chirps.
“‘Ello,” the employee echos, then starts speaking in Spanish. I picked up the word ‘hermosa’, but not much else.
“Gracias!” She tells the woman with a big grin.
Our Little Future Barista
Before we headed home, I let her loose to run off some of the sugar and hopefully leave without a fight. Little girls have such big personalities. Instead of making laps around the wet floor sign, Gingiecakes beelined for the merch display.
In most instances, I’m sure the employees would panic. A toddler has full potential to be a tornado terror, and she certainly has time’s she has me wishing I could disappear off to Oz. But that day was not today!
She grabbed a single bag of coffee and shouted, “my coffee!”, then proceeded to carry the pound cradled in her arms like a baby. Her coffee connoisseur father would be so proud, yet I don’t think I would like to have coffee grandbabies. Hey, maybe he would!
This girl is the sweetest girl there is. She is sugar and spice, sprinkles and sass. My sweet girl, Gingiecakes brings so much joy into my life, even when I am feeling under the weather. Her smile makes me smile (and donuts make her smile). I am looking forward to another coffee date in the near future!
