Taking Back August

It’s a week into August. I am laying in bed drenched in sweat (arguably covered in rain, because there’s a monsoon outside) after a late session at the gym. Tonight was my 6th consecutive day running, and my 8th mile for the month.

It’s a week into August, and I finally realized my goal for the month. Yes, I want to run. But there’s more than that.

In April I was discouraged by my Run 365 progress. In May I stepped down from my participation with No Excuse Mom, and my fitness dwindled. In June I picked up a KidsFitness class, and felt that spark for non-running again. And July I decided to stop complaining.

I bought a notebook and decided to track my miles. Every mile matters. I also decided to do push-ups, squats, and leg lifts each morning. I didn’t have a clear goal yet, but I needed something on paper to keep me motivated.
One week into August, and here are my goals:

  • Exceed 30 miles. I don’t care how much, but I will exceed 30. No excuses.
  • Focus on arms. Push-ups and pull-ups at home. Max out shoulder press, chest press, row, and lay pull downs at the gym.
  • Lift every day. Period. There are no rest days.

Today it rained, a lot. The skies of Motu Nui fell down on southeast Texas. I nearly died bringing Sassy out for ice cream when suddenly the water was two feet deep (thankfully I had an exit strategy). There was an perfect excuse not to go to the gym tonight. But I used up my excuses April-June. There are no more. August is for crushing goals.
