Thanksgiving is my families. Sometimes Thanksgiving is meant for friends. The history of Thanksgiving is not as pretty as we portrayed it back in grade school, but nonetheless we are taking it back as a time to enjoy friends and family. Oh- and it is a time to enjoy good food.
This year, Ryan and I brought Sassy up to the Upstate in South Carolina. After my grandfather’s passing earlier this month, my father has been in New York, caring for my grandmother. This meant that my mother was alone at her house. Last year, Sassy and I were babysitting a dog and had Thanksgiving in a strangers home. Ryan was more alone than any of us last year, and fell asleep while his turkey was cooking, and woke up to a pile of toast. Thankfully, he had a house to wake up to and it didn’t burn down. Either way we were all very excited to go up and have a proper Thanksgiving with my mom, and her two dogs.
My mom was excited to make all of her traditional staples, but we wanted to bring some of our own food as well.
We ended up bringing ingredients up to their house, and running to Ingles to grab some more, and baked as a new little family that day. It was a great first holiday with Ryan and some of my family.
The Thanksgiving Menu:
- Turkey with Dressing
- Stuffed Mushrooms
- Mashed Potatoes
- Brussel Sprouts with Cranberry
- Glazed Mushrooms
- Sweet Potatoes
- Sweet Potato soufflée
- Macaroni and Cheese
- Apple Pie
My Nanny always made deviled eggs first, so they were easy to grab throughout the morning into lunch as the turkey baked.
The apple pie was an adventure. We stuffed it as full as possible which prevented it from setting properly. We should have made a streusel up on top instead. But it was still delicious.
