Not going to lie, it’s pretty discouraging that I finally get a weekend entirely focused on me and it’s ruined by the coronavirus. Hello, my birthday and Mother’s Day back to back, and we have to stay home. I would much rather be on a weekend getaway, checking off some things on my 2020 goal list. But instead, I’m stuck home. Boo you, corona virus.
So we decided to make lemonade from the situation and celebrate at home. The covid-19 was giving me major Mean Girls vibes (pulling from the “you can’t sit with us” quote), so I decided to run with it. I can’t say we had a party exactly, since it was just our little trio. But these details could easily be scaled up to accommodate guests! In the end, it was a lot of fun to plan and decorate a Mean Girls themed birthday party at home, and I hope you enjoy it as well.
Mean Girls Themed Birthday Party at Home
I’m not a regular mom, I’m a cool mom.
Banner
I decided to make a banner, instead of trying to find and buy one. First I made the templates on Canva (use that link to make an account, and you’ll receive a Canva Credit!). After printing them out on colored construction paper, I cut them out and then used a hole punch. Then I used twine to make three rows. You could choose to string it all on one instead. Pro-Tip: punch two holes, one on either side, to keep the individual flag flat and held in place.
If you want to use my exact template, click here. You won’t be able to edit my design, but you should be able to make a copy and edit that if necessary.
On Birthdays We Wear Pink
Of course I needed to dress the part. First I wanted to dress the part of Regina George, iconically wearing a leather skirt, white tank top, and pink cardigan. I wish I had some pink in my closet already, but it isn’t my favorite wardrobe color. Finding the perfect outfit while shopping online and without trying on was difficult. I found the cutest top at Old Navy, only to realize my local stores were closed and not doing curbside. I couldn’t risk ordering and it taking too long to arrive. So I found this cutie from TJ Maxx, which opened just in time.
Instead of a leather skirt, I opted for these faux leather biker shorts. I already had the faux leather leggings, and love them, so knew the shorts would get wear beyond the shoot.
Regina wears nude pumps, so obviously it was an excuse to wear my studded pumps. I mean where else can I wear them right now? The shoes were my first quarantine purchase, and had only been worn for easter so far.
Since we celebrated all weekend (it’s my party, I’ll do what I want), I bought two outfits. My second outfit was supposed to be a Cady Herron inspired, with a pink bodysuit and white shorts. I snagged them both from TJ Maxx, but didn’t try them on. The shorts ended up fitting horribly. So instead I paired it with white jeggings I already had. And threw on a leather jacket (and a denim jacket later in the day)
Something to Remember: a Burn Book
Instead of a Burn Book, where the girls release anger and frustration by writing mean things about their classmates, I decided to make a positivity journal.
I mixed acrylic paint with a shimmer medium, and used long strokes to cover the notebook with three coats. It dried for 15 minutes in between coats.
Then I used a stamp (old purchase from Dollar Spot) to stamp Positivity Journal. I can’t wait to fill it with good things that happen. (If you haven’t already, make sure you read yesterday’s post listing 30 of my big life experiences)
Mean Girls Birthday Sweet Treats
What’s a party without food? I admit, first I snagged a dozen donuts from Duck Donuts and wanted to photograph with those. But they’re made fresh, and fricken delicious. They didn’t make it home beautifully. And I ate most of them in the car. So I decided to make treats for out little DIY party instead.
Pink Drinks
Mrs. George : [serving the Plastics fruit drinks] Hey, you guys! Happy hour is from four to six!
Cady : Um, is there alcohol in this?
Mrs. George : Oh, God, honey, no! What kind of mother do you think I am? Why, do you want a little bit? Because if you’re going to drink I’d rather you do it in the house
Note: The pink color will be light. Enjoy!
Mini Birthday Cakes
Perhaps the healthiest, guilt free birthday cake ever. So healthy you could eat it for breakfast. And it takes 15 minutes from start to finish.
How to Make Mini Birthday Cakes
- 2 cups protein pancake mix
- 1.5 cups water
- Sprinkles (your choice!)
Preheat oven to 350.
Mix the pancake mix and water in a bowl, just until combined. Don’t over mix, or they’ll be tough. Add a few sprinkles, just for color.
Pour the batter into a small, greased cookie sheet (don’t forget to spray the sides). Spread it out with a spatula. It will be thick, so make sure it gets into the corners. Sprinkle more sprinkles on top.
Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until set.
Plop the pancake onto the counter. Then use cookie cutters to make the rounds. We were able to get 3 circles and 3 hearts! Stack them on a plate.
Serve with syrup, fresh fruit, or even whipped cream.
