Book Review: Women on Top by Michelle Miller

Women everywhere want to shatter the glass ceiling and become women on top of their career. Be the best, work the hardest, push your way to the top no matter what it takes. You don’t need a man to get you there, but what if you want one by your side and you’re crushing the comparison trap?

Women on Top by Michelle Miller contains of eight short stories following women who are working their way to the top of the corporate ladder, and seeking satisfaction in their love lives.

Synopsis of Women on Top

Each “chapter”, named after the female protagonist, follows a woman in a position of power, on her pursuit of love. The reader receives a deep, first person perspective of each woman’s desire to move up the social or career ladder. One story follows a woman who purchases a dog to help attract a mate for herself, and the dog; think 101 Dalmatians, but with a little fluff ball. She envisions the meetup and plans every detail before expecting the dog to do its job. She soon realizes that a dog is a real responsibility, and feels defeated by her perfect plan. But sometimes things work out in ways we don’t expect.

The final story in the book sums up the theme for the entire book: loving yourself cannot be found through your career, or through your relationship. It follows a woman who loses herself following a breakup. The pair had been together for most of her life, and when he left her he took her heart with him. She seeks redemption, and searches for herself through a scandalous list in her little black book, and ultimately discovers what it means to be happy.

Reader Thoughts

First and foremost, the format was terrible. Although they’re described as short stories, in truth they are not complete stories. Each story focuses on the woman’s point of view up until meeting the man she may or may not end up with. However, then they end abruptly. Most of the plot and details are skipped over or rushed through to cut it off and get to the next story. Although some of the character might have been interesting to read, they could and should have their own novel.
