With the start of the new year comes a lot of revivals and resolves; restoring balance in the home, setting a weekly/monthly budget for the year, remembering to go shopping every week instead of twice a month, vowing to eat out less and cook at home more, and the inevitable declaration of putting fitness first and returning to the gym full force.
Last night, while breaking down our weekly budget, I noticed my annual gym membership had come out. I admit I am the least committed gym goer in existence (who actually goes. Jonathan doesn’t even go.) In fact, other than my weekly zumba class, I usually don’t go.
Flashback many years to my very first fitness blog. The original Finding Fitness was formed on the concept that Americans are too busy to workout, either at the gym or at home, and had to find fitness in their daily lifestyles. I posted tips on how to sneak fitness into a busy life, like parking further away, using a hand basket instead of a cart at the grocery store, taking the stairs (or even making stair laps during your lunch break). That idea shifted as I left my corporate job, got married and had a baby, and became a stay at home mom with the ability to go to the gym and workout at home. Oh, how the tables have turned. (Yet somehow my ability to blog had come to a complete halt once I no longer sat at a desk 40+ hours each week.)
So I decided to find the value of my gym membership.
Is it worth the money?
I determined that my *Weekly Cost is about $17.50. If I only attend Zumba, once each week, that would be the True Value equivalent of paying $17.50 per class. Most drop in Zumba classes are $10, so that doesn’t justify my membership. However, if I commit to attend Centergy each week as well, the daily class “fee” drops to about $8.75. Which is much more justifiable.
Looking at these numbers helped me to realize that I need to utilize 2+ classes/sessions/services at the gym each week to find what I determined to be the true value at my gym. I will use this to help motivate me to do so.
(*This amount is for our family plan, which includes my husband’s lazy butt. Well, he’s not lazy, he’s just more committed to outside marathon training)
How many times do you need to go to the gym to find your value? Will you vow to do it with me?
