Me: a New Mom Struggling to Find Time for Fitness

While competing in pageants I was inspired to workout to look my best on stage. I was naturally thin, but my CMT had caused muscular atrophy and scoliosis, and I just looked award on stage. Muscles helped correct my walk, balance my figure, and feel good. But now that I’ve aged out and have no plans or desire to compete in the Mrs division, I had lost some of my motivation to workout. I’m naturally thin after all. So 2016 is the year I workout for me.

I set a few running goals in my 2016 resolutions, and I also have some non-fitness goals (finish my ongoing 2 year PageantFile project, hold a pageant), but one thing I am trying to do is simply be active with my baby. I think that simply experiencing activity is the best way to inspire activity. One way I am doing this is by brining her to more events sponsored by the Whole Mothering Center. They hold weekly walks each Monday and Mommy & Me Yoga classes each Tuesday. They’re free, which is great. But also they are a great community of other moms who are active with their kids. One Gingiecakes gets a little older they also hold Playdates, but we have some time until she’ll be in the playpen at Chik-Fil-A.

Lumberton Community Park

So we found time…

Yesterday we went to the WMC Monday Walk at the Lumberton Park. There is a little playground, a disk golf course with a pond,  and a 1-mile loop around the whole thing. I had never been there before but I will be back. My normal walking spot is only .6 mile loop, and after the 3rd go I get bored. Three loops at this park is a lot more satisfying.

The “Beware of Snakes” signs are a little unsettling, but we’ll cross that bridge when Gingiecakes is old enough to play on the playground and a snake tries to eat her.

Jonathan left early Tuesday morning for a field work job in Norfolk, Virginia leaving Gingiecakes and me to fend for ourselves- and keep ourselves busy. She woke me up early (well, 8am, but that’s early for me), and I was feeling sluggish. I put her in her bouncer and she was so content. I was intending to attend yoga, but I could have taken a nap!

I changed my Facebook rsvp to “not attending”, then tweeted that I wasn’t going. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending how you look at it, physically typing that made me realize how lame my excuse was. I decided it wasn’t worth the day off, so we attended yoga after all.

Yoga class was jammed packed! There were children everywhere and it was difficult to focus, but that is the purpose of this class– learning to focus through times of hectic parenting. Gingie was a little needy and wanted to nurse throughout, so we had an exciting morning finding variants for the poses where she could be in my arms.

Powerwalk at Klein Park

We continued our fitness Tuesday at Klein Park (after lunch and a diaper change at home). I was hoping to go to a new park, but sometimes you just go where you’re comfortable. This park is almost walking distance (maybe one day I’ll run there and back). Normally I do three loops, but there were many disk golfers who feel like the elitists of the park and roll their eyes if they have to pause their game as you walk by. And it gets boring. So instead my second loop went deeper into disk golf territory into the back trails. It was muddy, but I think a muddy sneaker is the sign of a run well done.

I don’t know what I’m doing tomorrow, but it won’t be nothing!
