Bar fights, broken hearts, and a grudge since high school doesn’t seem like a warm and fuzzy romance novel. Somehow Lucy Score is able to pull it all together in the first book of the first small town romance series titled Protecting What’s Mine.
Trouble just rolled into the parking lot of a bar in the fictional small town of Benevolence. Rather than send her on her way, the hometown hero strikes a deal that could shake up a lot more than the rumors.
Synopsis of Pretend You’re Mine by Lucy Score
Harper is a runaway. Well, is it still considered being a runaway if you’re an adult running from your past? Either way, she is not the type to settle down because then her past could catch up with her. But when she accidentally walked into a bar fight, literally saving the day, she also falls into the sights of Luke Garrison, hometown hero.
Luke has been single for quite a while, and with good reason. His broken heart won’t let someone new in, and he’s ok with that. As a member of the National Guard, he doesn’t have time for a relationship anyway. Unfortunately his friends and family refuse to accept that he isn’t looking for a new relationship.
Harper and Luke come up with a plan. She needs somewhere to stay until she can move on to the next town, and Luke needs his small town to get off his back. It’s a match made in heaven, especially since he’s set to deploy and faking a long distance relationship is a lot easier than faking one where you’d have to PDA. Their plan was flawless.
Well, until Harper started poking through his stuff and discovers the source of his heart break. The more time she spends waiting for him to come home, the more likely it is that the men from her past figure out where to find her. And Luke won’t be able to save her this time if he’s halfway across the globe.
Reader Thoughts- Pretend You’re Mine
This book is the first book of a small town romance mini series that takes place in the fictional small town of Benevolence. Although a cute overall story, it pulled in a lot of references to characters who wouldn’t debut until the other books. Even though each book can be read alone, it’s usually nice to see the characters from other books threading their lives throughout the other books. It was interesting to catch bits and pieces of character quarrels with no relevance to this book. It might make the reader want to read the other books to get the full story, or it might have them get confused by constant reference to characters without knowing their storyline. It’s not a dealbreaker that makes this book a true series though. It can be read alone, but it takes effort.
Admittedly, some of the character development is lacking. Harper is an adult, but her decisions feel very rash and not thought out. Luke’s past takes forever to be revealed, but readers can pretty much assume to some degree from the beginning. The relationship is… strange. They begin as a fake relationship, then essentially become an actual relationship that is actually toxic, before settling their problems and considering a relationship for real.
