Morning Workout Motivation: How to Workout in the Morning (if You’re NOT a Morning Person)

What do you call people who work out before 5am? The Rooster Crew

Working out before sunrise requires a spacial morning motivation that doesn’t come naturally to many people. Most people aren’t able to knockout a fitness class or morning workout at the crack of dawn, and need to train their mind as they’re training their body. If you are like most people, the thought of working out in the morning might not sound very exciting, and you’d rather sleep that extra hour or two. This Taurus definitely agrees. But if you want to jumpstart your day and get the workout out of the way, power to ya. Let’s motivate your morning and crush that workout.

Why should you work out in the morning?

At the end of the day, you could ask 100 people who workout regularly if they prefer morning workouts or evening workouts, and the answers will be split. It’s personal preference. Some people simply don’t have the time throughout the day, or require an early bedtime, for any other workout. Perhaps their job is labor intensive and they’re too exhausted to squeeze something in after dinner. Families with kids may have to decide which parent works out in the morning and who works out in the evening. There are so many reasons, and it depends on you and your schedule.

But there are benefits to workout out in the morning…

  • You get it out of the way
  • It will help you jumpstart your day
  • You can’t claim you “didn’t get to it” at the end of the night
  • Something can’t pop up and take that slot
  • You won’t be up all night after consuming preworkout

Tips for Crushing a Morning Workout

  1. Pack your bag the night before. Personally, I keep a pair of sneakers in my car at all times. I never know when I might be at work and get a call to do the workout with the members. Packing your gym bag with everything you need- clothes, towel, hairties, and sneakers will save the time and energy in the morning. Stack your outfit on your bag so you can quickly change and go. This might include your work clothes and shower needs, if you plan on going straight to work. If you do plan to shower at the gym, consider purchasing an extra set of shower essentials for your gym bag (store them in a gallon zip to prevent a mess) so you never have that excuse either.
  2. Even if you’re working out at home (there are so many amazing online streaming fitness platforms right now!), get dressed. Sure the benefit of working out at home is that you could workout in your pajamas. But getting dressed and even putting on sneakers will get your mind ready for giving 100%. Pajamas are for sleeping, and if your mind is still asleep you will probably not have an effective workout.
  3. Take a “pre-workout selfie” and post it on your Instagram stories. This might sound silly, but it will not only hold you accountable but could inspire someone else to join the rooster crew as well.
  4. Prep your beverages. If you can’t live without coffee in the morning, make sure you have your coffee pot set to delay brew so it’s waiting for you to grab. (check out all my coffee station essentials here) Fill your water bottle and keep it in the fridge so its nice and cold, just don’t forget it at home! If you plan to use pre-workout, mix it the night before. Or, pro-tip, use a formula portion container to have proportioned pre-workout ready to go in your bag, without lugging around the entire container.
  5. Fuel is essential. Eating in the morning is the hardest for me. Working out on a full stomach is hard, but your body needs fuel. Keep a stash of nutrient dense bars in your bag, and build a small arsenal of ready to grab mini breakfasts. Egg bite muffins are easy to make, freeze well, and can be changed every batch based on what ingredients you have. Overnight oats are so easy, and can even be eaten without warming up. My favorite is Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with granola and fruit.
