The Holy Sticks: Local Tourist in Charleston

Living in the Low Country means over 250 days of sunshine each year, and I’m not complaining. The heat beats the snow of New York any day. Thankfully, there are plenty of ice cream shops to keep us cool. We recently visited a new one, the Holy Sticks, in downtown Charleston. But this ice cream shop doesn’t have any cones. Or scoops. These treats are served up on sticks!

The Holy Sticks is a new dessert shop in downtown Charleston serving up sweet treats on a stick, just like the name suggests. They are heavenly. (ok, so the Holy part is a reference to the Holy City. But also, these sticks are heavenly.) We found out about this new shop shortly after the grand opening and made a special trip to ‘ole Chucktown to see if they tasted as good as the pictures looked.

Y’all, first of all, this place is adorable. The bright teal walls are covered with inspirational quotes. There’s Instagram worthy accent walls everywhere- rainbow shingle accents, rainbow stripes, drippy ice cream on the doors. It’s no surprise I saw The Holy Sticks on social media long before I heard anything.

Got allergies?

Be sure to mention any allergies when you start, so they can use fresh toppings. Don’t risk cross contamination! I have a nut allergy, and have dealt with cross contamination in the past. Thankfully the staff sounded very aware and prepared to use individual toppings that wouldn’t have any risk of exposure to nuts or peanut butter. That being said, those with an airborne peanut allergy should know that there is peanut butter dip melting at all times.

How Does it Work?

1. Choose your base. Start with an ice cream pop, or even a waffle or banana. The ice cream pops come in two sizes, small or large, at are flat rate of $4 or $5 regardless of the toppings. Flavors include chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry of course, fun options like caramel swirl, peanut butter, or even mint chocolate chip.

2. Dip it. The stick is first dipped into a melted chocolate, white chocolate

3. Dunk it. It’s actually better to choose your topping before your dip, since they only have 30 seconds before the dip hardens. There are dozens of crunchy options, like assorted sprinkles, nuts, and various crushed chocolate bars or cereals.

4. Add a drizzle. Choose from any of the dips, but have it drizzled on the end.

Did I mention that these delicious treats are flat rate? Regardless of your dip, dunk, or drizzle, they are $4 or $5. Oh, and that the ice cream is made with enough fat that it melts slower than regular ice cream, so you can truly enjoy it.
