Top Baby Names for 2023

It’s every baby name fanatic’s favorite day today because the Social Security administration officially released the top 1000 baby names, both boy and girl, baby names, from 2022. This is awesome because it helps us make predictions for which names will be popular this year.

To skip the blog and jump straight to the list, head over to the Social Security admin site.

As soon as the list was posted, I jumped on to catch up with the trends. The top 10, or even the top 20, are exactly as we expect them to be. Those top spots are really hard to shake. A few of the names went up or down a placement or two, but for the most part, what is super popular is going to stay popular.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Baby Name in 2023

Before you read this years considerations, be sure to check out last year’s post, things to consider when choosing a baby name.

Although there are chances that names lower on the list will fly up this year, it’s not likely. The bottom half of the list is a great place to look for popular but not trendy baby names.

It’s important to note that the same name with different spellings will have its own placement. So be sure to look at the total number of babies with the name you’re considering, and the total number of babies with alternative spellings, rather than just the ranking of the name with your chosen spelling.

Top Gender Neutral Baby Names

Gender, neutral, baby names have been rising in popularity over the past few years. I made this list based on which names were on both the boy and girl lists. This excludes any name that did not break the top 1000 in 2022 on both sides.

My favorite gender neutral, baby names for 2023 is Salem. I hadn’t seen it prior to this list and I am loving it. Flemington was actually on my list back in 2015, but it ultimately was not chosen.

Popular Baby Names that Aren’t Trendy

I chose these names right from the middle of the list. Most of these rank between 500 and 600, where they are still popular but may still be the only one in their class.

This is apparently where I want to name my future kiddos from, because I love all of them- even names I didn’t put on the lists. These are just so pretty and slightly unique without being weird. There is a classic vibe as well, which I adore.

From the two lists, my favorites are Florence (or Indie) and Ledger.

Top Baby Names Ending in -Lyn

One of the most common baby name endings on this year’s list, mainly on the little girl side, was baby names ending in LYN, or LYNN. There were also some LINE, but they mostly mirrored the names listed below.

Personally, I love the name Adalyn, and Avalyn is an adorable alternative I will definitely consider.

Top Baby Names Ending in -ER

Ryan’s all time favorite baby name is Parker. He’s concerned because his last name ends in -ER, but I think it’s ok because the overall sound is not the same.

It was really easy to pull together a baby BOY names ending in ER, but I had to get very deep in the Top 1000 Baby Names in order to curate a list for girls. I’m glad I did, because Denver is an absolutely gorgeous baby name. It wasn’t on my list, but now it is.

Let me know what you think about these lists! Or if you have a little one with any of these names.
